The flavor is inspired by the traditional Swedish holiday drink, Glögg. The drink appeared in Sweden in the late Middle Ages, when low-quality wine was mixed with cinnamon, cardamom, cloves, and orange peels. Later, wine flavored with honey and spices was heated and used as a warming drink during the cold seasons.
Today, Swedish Glögg is a combination of red wine, port, and brandy infused with aromatic spices.
